James (Jim) Wm. Goebel of Stony Plain, AB was born in his family home in Stony Plain to Bill and Tiny Goebel on October 29, 1934 and passed away on June 18, 2017 at 82 years of age at Westview Hospital.

Jim lived his entire life in Stony Plain raising his family and dedicating 39 years to the Stony Plain Volunteer Fire Department with 28 years as the Fire Chief. Jim was very proud of his long family history and heritage in Stony Plain, being the grandson of Israel and Louisa Umbach. Jim was active over the years curling, coaching baseball, serving on Church council, involved in the Lions Club and of course, his fire department.  He continually strove to get the best equipment and training for “his boys”. Jim was awarded the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal in 1987 by the Governor General of Canada.

Jim was predeceased by his parents Bill and Tiny; his first wife Joan (nee Lenz); son Larry; three sisters: Shirley Grande, Audrey Harris and Doreen Thompson.

 

He will be forever loved and remembered by his loving wife Jean (nee Beattie); daughters: Dianne Smeltzer, Lynne (Harvey) Scheideman; three much loved grandchildren: Lauren Smeltzer, Sara and Jason Scheideman; four sisters: Rhona Armstrong, Kay Albert, Marjorie Patrick and Marilyn Rivest as well as many extended family members and friends.
