Gerald P. Mercer, 85, passed away peacefully, in Leduc, AB on January 20, 2020. He was born to parents Jeremiah & Gertrude Mercer, on October 26, 1934, in Oswego, New York, but was raised in Corner Brook. Gerald, “Gerry” worked for many years at the Bowaters Mill in Corner Brook, as did his father before him, then at Labrador Linerboard, in Stephenville. He worked overseas in the Middle East and later retired from Skeena Cellulose, in Prince Rupert, BC. continuing to independently contract well into his 70’s. He was predeceased by his wife Marie Rowsell, mother of his children, and second wife Joyce Mackenzie. Gerry is survived by daughters; Deborah Cantwell (Joe), Chris Chapella (Paul), Joanne Craig (Jim), and Linda-Ray Doyle (Joe), as well as grandchildren; Gerry, Corey, Jayson, Amy, Leslie, Joshua and Taylor and many great-grandchildren. Gerry was known for his love of all things mechanical, airplanes, Canadian history and any kind of hunting. In his early adult years, he was very active in local politics, and community work throughout Corner Brook and all of Newfoundland. Over the years, he was an active member of the Lion’s Club, Rotary Club, and Royal Canadian Legion from one coast to the other. The memorial service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2020, at 2 p.m. at Serenity Funeral Services, Leduc AB. The family requests that people make donations in support of charity of your choosing, in lieu of sending flowers.
