Frieda Meier

Frieda Meier, a long-time resident of Alberta, died June 30, 2019 at the age of 88 surrounded by her loving family. Frieda was many things: devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, adventurer, artist, accordionist, dance instructor, and above all our best friend.

Frieda is survived by her children, Ingrid and Mark; her grandchildren, Matthew (Angela), Ryan, and Rachel; her great-grandchildren, Luke and Rose.

She is predeceased by her husband, Manfred (Fred) Meier, her parents, Heinrich and Hilda Mertke, her sister, Inge Lipp, and her brother, Erwin Mertke (age 18 months).

Frieda was born on May 22, 1931 in Pokoschtschewo, in the Oblast (Province) of Zhitomir (Zhytomyr) in the region of Volhynia then part of Russia (today the Ukraine). She immigrated to Canada with her mother and sister in 1949 sponsored by the Zielke family of Leduc, Alberta. Frieda worked at Leduc Bakery where she interviewed and hired a young journeyman baker from Germany who later became her husband. Frieda and Fred were married October 1, 1953. The following month they purchased the bakery and began selling their famous poppy seed strudel. The next year Fred and Frieda welcomed their first child Ingrid, followed by Mark, and they became the most important part of their lives.

Frieda was an avid adventurer and active in her community. She enjoyed travelling and visited over 65 countries. Her children and grandchildren have fond memories of road trips through the Rockies. Frieda and Fred loved to entertain their friends and family, with great parties and family dinners. They eagerly accepted grandchildren and great-grandchildren for overnight visits and pancake breakfasts. They will be deeply missed by their friends, family, and all who knew them.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday July 11, 2019 at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church 11223 51 Avenue NW, Edmonton, Alberta.

Dear Ingrid and family,

Your mother’s passing was noted with very great regret, coupled with the greatest admiration for her and your dad. They were a pivotal part of the growing up in Leduc of all our group of friends, and will be always sorely missed. I was so honoured when she sponsored (with you) my membership in the GCCA and took a few minutes to speak to my son Will. I loved to watch them dance together at the Oktoberfest events. U will always remember her fondly.

Leanne Carol Smyth

Mark & Ingrid,
I am very sorry to hear about your Mom’s passing, she was an amazing woman! It is extremely difficult to lose a parent. I know what a hard time this is for your families. All my best and condolences.
