FORGES, Rita Hendrika

Hendrika Bruinsma was born on September 26, 1938 in Groningen, the Netherlands, the eldest of four children. She was predeceased by her husband Morris den Otter and her parents Berend and Antjie Bruinsma (nee Veenema).
The Bruinsma family immigrated to Canada in March of 1951 when Hendrika was 12, joining the growing Dutch community in Edmonton. During immigration her name was changed to Rita, a “Canadian” name. She attended Cromdale School, completing Grade 9 before beginning to work as a typist and telephone switchboard operator for Mack Trucks. The family attended the Christian Reformed Church where she met Morris den Otter, who had immigrated to Canada with the Aalbert den Otter family. They married on October 10, 1958, raising a family of six children together. Rita returned to High School in 1982 to complete her Alberta High School Diploma, attending M.E.Lazerte High School where Morris was a teacher. She graduated in 1984.

The year 1993/1994 was an especially difficult year for Rita as she lost her husband Morris to cancer, her mother to cancer, and her father to heart disease.
Richard Forges came into Rita’s life in 1995 after having lost his wife to cancer. Rick and Rita were married on November 11, Remembrance Day, of that year. Rita embraced Rick’s two children as her own and considered herself to be the mother of eight.
For the last seven years, Rita struggled with heart disease. She passed away November 6, 2022 just five days short of her 27th wedding anniversary. Rita is survived by her husband Richard Forges, her eight children and their spouses, forty-three grandchildren with 25 spouses, and 51 great-grandchildren. (If you’re counting, that makes 136 of us including Rick, of course!) She is also survived by her sisters Corrie van den Berg (Tony) and Jane den Braber (Len) and brother Robert Bruinsma (Louisa).
