Grant was born to Winnifred and James Metcalfe in Souris, Manitoba. The youngest of four children, he served in the RCAF during the Second World War in Fort St. John, BC. After the war he met and married Annie Massart and they settled in Brandon Manitoba where Grant worked as an accountant. Their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1952. In 1965, the family moved to Calgary where Grant worked for the Canadian Cancer Society and Husky Oil. Anne died in 1973.
In 1975, Grant met and married June (Parker) Cecil. After Grant’s retirement, they moved to Vancouver Island where they were active in community and church choirs,
and enjoyed several trips to Hawaii. In 1992 they returned to the Calgary area, eventually settling in Cochrane, where they lived until 2000, then moved to the Barrhead area and then to St. Albert.
Wherever he lived, Grant’s gardening skills were well known as was his love of music. Over the years he joined numerous choirs and was always available to offer his skills as a church organist.
He was predeceased by his parents, sister Vilda, brother Ross and wife June and is mourned by his brother Ray, daughter Elizabeth, step granddaughter Jennifer (Troy) Stuckey, grandson Jesse Wiegand, granddaughters Tracey (Lau rence) Zilkie and Kaitlyn Wolfert (Stephen Buhler) 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and numerous friends near and far.
A Celebration of Grant’s life will take place on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 11203 68 Street, Rev. Ron Horst presiding, Rt. Rev. Jane Alexander celebrant. Both Grant and June will be interred at Queens Park Cemetery Calgary at 4:30 p.m. on September 9, 2013.
