Eelke Eilander, 91, of Leduc, Alberta passed away on May 15, 2017 at Leduc. Eelke lived a full, rich life. His family is in sadness, but he is probably in awe of everything. We can only imagine what his eyes are seeing right now!
Eelke Eilander was born in Niezijl, The Netherlands in 1925. He was the 3rd of 4 boys born to Ate and Pietertje Eilander. During the Indonesian National Revolution, he was stationed in Indonesia. He came to Canada in 1952 with his bride, Mary. Farming was in his blood and the opportunity of agriculture in Canada drew him here, even though it meant leaving his parents and 3 brothers in Holland.
In 2012, Eelke and Mary celebrated 60 years of marriage. Together they accepted the wonderful, sometimes challenging, joy of raising a family of six children, which also gave them 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Even though life was not always easy for them, they kept their faith.
Eelke had a strong faith life. Church attendance was of prime importance to him—he craved learning about God’s Word and listened intently to sermons. He taught his children to love the Lord, and the church. He and his friends were responsible for founding Grace Reformed Church just outside of Leduc.
He was predeceased by his son Peter and his loving wife Mary. He is survived by his children Jacky Ketel (Marty), Pat Eilander (Rick Nyen), Art Eilander (Rebecca), Wilma Thompson , and Jerrold Eilander. His grandchildren are Brian Ketel, Steven Ketel, Serena Ketel, Jeff Ketel, Sydney Elian, Jessy Elian, Carey Drew, Liam Thompson, Alena Thompson, Lane Eilander, Sammy Eilander, Greg Thompson and Nick Thompson.
