DRAGLAND, Bernice May

Bernice May Dragland

Bernice was born with Down’s Syndrome, and although life was not without struggles, she taught our family how to love unconditionally, and how to accept all people, with differences. She learned to read, write, swim, bowl, and enjoyed Special Olympics with her many ‘group home’ friends. Her favorite craft was rug hooking. Bernice had such a great heart, and always wanted everyone to have her gifts. She passed away peacefully and leaves us with wonderful memories. Bernice is survived by her sisters, Betty (Manfred), Ellen (Marvin), nieces and nephews; along with her good friend Dennis Sturrock. She was predeceased by her father Ken (1981), mother Mydra (1998), and brother Stan (2022). We would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Long-term care in Wetaskiwin, for the good care she received for the past four years. A family ‘Celebration of Life’ and graveside service will be held at a later date.

Oh Beenie May, I loved working with you. You were such a loving, funny, strong, tender, artistic, brave woman! I remember all the fun we had having water fights with neighbours. The time you took a giant scoop of horse radish thinking it was mashed potatoes. The time you and your roommate got drunk at the pumpkin ball. The time you made me tea when I had the flu. The salad you made with a whole jar of Cheez Whiz on top. The time you baked a cake with salt instead of sugar. When you waxed the floor with furniture polish and we had to wear shoes inside for 2 weeks. Listening to you and Stan sing “Don’t Let Your Dingle Dangle in the Dirt.” Doing crafts with your mom. Helping you make thousands of rug hooking kits. I have too many awesome memories to count. I’ll miss your face for the rest of my life.

Betty, Manfred and family, our deepest sympathy on Bernices’ passing. Betty, we know how much you two loved each other by the things you told us about her and the time that you spent together over all these years. I know how much you will miss her. You are in our thoughts and our prayers.
