It is with great sadness that the family of Douglas Maschmeyer announces his passing at the end of his 86th year. Born Jan 20, 1931 in Lamont hospital, he passed away in his own home in Bruderheim Friday Jan 19 at 4:30 pm. He completed 87 years in and around Bruderheim.
Doug is survived by his loving partner, Virginia Differenz; son, Gerald (Sandra) Maschmeyer; granddaughters Brooke (Brett) McBride of Kindersley, Saskatchewan; Angela (Ronnie) Daub, and Amber (Ryan) Taschuk of Fort Saskatchewan; daughter Glenda (Mark) Fermandell of Edmonton; daughter Valerie Differenz, son Robin (Marie) Differenz, granddaughters Rhianna and Emily Differenz all of Peace River, and the joys of his life the 6 great grandchildren: Braelyn and Brayden McBride; Jeremy and Jordan Daub; Averi and Quinn Taschuk. He is also survived by brother Dennis Maschmeyer and sister Oleatha Lukawesky and numerous nieces and nephews.
A farmer all his life Doug loved deeply, Virginia, his soulmate, his family, his yard, his dogs and to spend time in the “pig shop” which he had ‘suggested’ the floor be refinished as it is. He spent many hours resting there admiring Gerald’s collection, and watching the young ones tear around. After traveling the world selling pigs, in recent years he could be found swinging beside “Jim” the cowboy, under the spruce tree in his Bruderheim backyard surrounded by bird houses, rocks and pigs of different shapes and sizes that he had collected. When he spotted a unique item whether in Alaska, on Vancouver Island, PEI, Peace River or in a catalogue, he bartered until he got it. Many people we know sport a Welcome Rock on their property thanks to his generosity. A valued member of the community, he will be sadly missed.
In lieu of flowers Donations can be made to the Mazankowski Heart Institute, the Diabetes Assn for research or Josephburg Ag Society.
A celebration of life will be held February 9 at 2:00pm in Josephburg Moyer Centre. Be prepared to share through an open mike.
