Doreen Barnett (nee Schisler)
Our wonderful mother Doreen Barnett passed away peacefully as she slept on May 29, 2016.
Doreen was born March 19, 1929 to George and Susan Schisler. She always spoke fondly of her happy childhood in Princeton B.C. with her sister and brothers, Stan (Olga Schisler), Joyce (Bob Brown) and Kenny (Sandy Phillipps). Doreen traveled to Edmonton for college then married and filled her life with a career, family and wonderful friends.
Doreen loved people. She was independent, kind, encouraging and accepting of others. She enjoyed many games of golf with her much loved in-laws Jean, Joanne and Jack, and loved to visit with George, James and Jeannie. There were many happy days spent with friends and neighbours in her Inglewood garden, relaxing at the family cabin at Sandy Lake and with her bridge club that met for over 30 years. Summer vacations to B.C. and winter ski trips were frequent highlights.
Doreen was a sports fan who watched figure skating, curling, football and the Blue Jays. Doreen loved to decorate her home and use her beautiful china and antiques to make every holiday an extra special event. Mom dressed with style, always with coordinating lipstick.
Most of all she loved her family – Craig (Sharon Barnett), Carolyn, Neil (Maureen Lambert), Jean (Dan Alexander), Diane (Joe Racz), grandchildren Jamilyn, Ryan, Kelsey (Dean Little), Jani (Nathan Thomas), Olisa, Caitlin, Chris, Amanda, Jesse (Darian Gilbert).
With the support of the residents and staff at Rosedale Villa and the kind staff from Comfort Keepers, Doreen was able to remain independent and active throughout her life, continuing to enjoy card games, bingo and music.
A gathering in remembrance of Doreen will be held Sunday August 28, 2016 1:00 – 4:30 PM at Riverdale House 9231-100 Ave Edmonton. Family and friends are welcome to attend this casual drop-in open house to share food, love and memories.
