Christo Angelov passed away peacefully but suddenly on the night of Nov 24, 2017 at the age of 74. He lived a rich life. Born in the small village of Voivoda, Bulgaria to hardworking parents, the Lord had given Christo a calling. He persevered through socio-economic and personal struggles, and against all odds went on to become a world-renowned scientist in the field of Organic Chemistry. At the age of 20, he started his post-secondary studies at the University of Sofia after completing his military service. In 1971, he went to St Petersburg to continue his studies and completed his PhD in Organic Chemistry in 1975. Upon completion, he returned to his motherland Bulgaria, where he began his work in teaching and research at the University of Shumen. In 1986 he returned to St Petersburg to receive the prestigious title of Doctor of Science. In 1988 he became a full professor and Vice President of the Shumen University. In the years to follow he was a sought-after scientist and was invited by various research groups worldwide to develop new models/compounds in the area of Organophosphorous Chemistry.
In 1992, he immigrated to Edmonton, Alberta and began his work in anti-cancer research which reached the level of clinical trials. His work ethic was impeccable and research was an outlet for his creative and genius mind.
Christo’s greatest joy and passion was his family. He lives on in the hearts of his wife, Pavlinka of 42 years, daughter Jordanka, and his two beautiful grandchildren: Sofia (age 6), and Nikolas Joshua (5 months old).
Christo was a devoted husband who treated his wife like his queen, and his daughter like his princess. Christo was his daughter’s hero. The two of them were like two peas in a pod.
He would visit with his grandchildren every week and would get down on the floor to play and engage with them. He called Sofia “my kokichentse”, which means snow drop – a spring flower found in Bulgaria.
In the last couple of months Christo bonded more and more with Nikolas, who would giggle and smile whenever he saw grandpa’s face.
He taught his family to persevere. Some of his favorite sayings were “You reach your goal not by rushing but by not stopping”, and “I want, I can, and I will”.
Christo’s family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to friends, neighbors, and Serenity Funeral Home for their care and support.
Christo’s life reflects the famous quote “Live your life in such a way that when you die you are the one smiling and everyone around you is crying”.
