Wendy Ellen Chivers passed away suddenly and peacefully at her father’s home in Sherwood Park on Saturday, Jan.16, 2021 at the age of 69 years. Wendy was the second born of twins to Harvey and Gertrude Hanlan on Feb. 2, 1951. She had a difficult start to life as the smaller twin. Doctors didn’t expect her to walk or finish school, but Wendy’s strength, love from her brother Wayne, and fighting spirit became evident early on as she proved the doctors wrong and thrived. Wendy grew up on the family farm near Ardrossan (Strathcona County), Alberta with her three siblings. She was known for her fun loving spirit and she cherished her family.
Upon graduating high school, Wendy started working in the insurance industry. It was then that Wendy met her future husband, Ray. Wendy and Ray married in 1971 and made their home on the Hanlan farm. A short while later, they welcomed their child, Leslie, Wendy’s pride and joy. The family moved to Ft. McMurray in 1980, where Wendy stayed until she began managing work camps in northern Alberta, living with her sister, Linda, when back in Sherwood Park. Over the years she worked and enjoyed traveling around the world to places such as Mexico, Greece, and Panama.
Since retiring, Wendy loved trying some of the great restaurants in the Edmonton area with family and friends. Wendy and her son loved to visit show homes and lottery homes together and dream of winning the perfect house while sharing a meal at one of the restaurants that Wendy loved to visit. While living with Linda, she was happy to be around family once again and developed a deep affection for a little Chihuahua named Señor, who never left her side. A few months ago, Wendy moved in with her father and stepmother to help them around the house.
Wendy will lovingly be remembered by her son Leslie (Teresa); father Harvey and stepmother Isabel; twin brother Wayne (Pat), sister and close friend Linda, and brother Ron. She will also be missed by numerous nieces and nephews, extended family, former in-laws, and close friends. Wendy was predeceased by her mother, Gertrude, and her daughter, Julie. A private family service was held to celebrate Wendy’s life on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2021 at Salisbury United Church in Sherwood Park. Interment will follow at a later date.
