It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Percy Chegwyn on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at the age of 84. Percy will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Irma, his son Cory (Jennifer), his daughter Terri (John), and grandchildren Tyler (Katie), Bret, Kyle, and Dylan. He will be dearly missed by his brothers and sisters, Faye Carson, Sam (Connie) Chegwin, David (Sharon) Chegwin, Darryl (Patti) Chegwin, Brian Chegwin, Bonnie (Tom) Cottingham, and Irma’s family, Irene McKean, Ed (Rita) Jolley, Bob (Joan) Jolley, as well as so many extended family members and friends. Percy loved family and friends so much and treasured everyone in his life.
Percy was born on the family farm near Vista, Manitoba on October 5, 1936. After school, he farmed with his father as well as working for his cousin’s construction company. He married Irma in 1963 and they moved to Brandon in 1965 so Percy could start his career with the Brandon Research Station. While he started in the Beef Cattle Department, it wasn’t long before he became Farm Manager, a position he held until he retired 30 years later. A highlight of his career was the opportunity to go to Tanzania, East Africa, with the family, to live and work on a Canadian Wheat Project for over 2 years. After returning from Africa, travelling continued to be a passion and there were many great trips within Canada and abroad, everything from camping to bus tours to cruises and more.
In 2006, Percy and Irma moved to Leduc, AB to live closer to their children and grandchildren. Leduc came to also offer a rich community of friends with many fun times at the Telford House Seniors Centre.
Throughout his life, he was very active volunteering in his community and church and was always ready to lend a hand to anyone. Service above self was a large part of Percy’s life.
The family extends their sincerest thanks for the kindness and care he received from Dr. Byers, Dr. Steels and all staff at Salem Manor Personal Care Home.
In lieu of flowers, we encourage donations to the Salem Manor Society, 4419 – 46 Street, Leduc, AB T9E 6L2, or go to the website: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/the-salem-manor-society; or charity of your choice.

Percy was one of the best neighbours we have had the pleasure to live beside. He was always pleasant and kind to us and we are grateful that we had the good fortune to have him as a neighbour for a number of years. May he rest in peace.

Percy will always be one of those special people who entered my life and brought so much joy. Him helping in the kitchen at Telford House and dancing with me will be memories I will always cherish.
