On January 16, 2022, heaven welcomed a true angel on earth.
Joanne, or affectionately known as ‘Grandma/Mama Jo’, passed from this earth peacefully, with her son, Greg, his wife Trish, and daughter Amanda, by her side.
Joanne was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on January 21, 1959. She is survived by her parents, Rose and Denis Payot of Whitewood, Saskatchewan. Her brothers David Payot and Alan Payot (Shelley Moore-Payot); nephews Keenan and Austin Payot Moore. Her son, Gregory Zurch (Patricia Saidler-Zurch); grandchildren Nevaeh, Noah and Nalliyah Saidler-Zurch. And her daughter Amanda Zurch.
Joanne lived a fulfilling life as a mother, grandmother, aunty, cousin and friend. She was a fabulous host as well, and everyone was welcome at Mama Jo’s! She had a revolving door and anyone who visited was greeted with warmth and care and experienced a true sense of belonging. Whether you came for the conversation, the games, or the peanut butter balls, you stayed for lasting memories that were guaranteed to follow.
Joanne had a heart of gold and was always there to lend a helping hand when there was a need. That big heart and her love for kids lead her to a successful career in Social Work. She started her career with Big Sisters and Big Brothers. She then went on to work for The Boys and Girls Club of Edmonton, WCB and ended her career helping young mothers finish school and learn how to support themselves at an outreach in Edmonton.
Joanne was great in the kitchen, loved gardening, doing crafts, feeding birds, and reading but most of all she loved her Oilers and Roughriders!
As some people journey through life, they leave footprints wherever they go, footprints of kindness and love, courage and compassion, humor and inspiration, joy, and faith. Joanne left many footprints during the short 62 years of her life. Footprints that will continue through her surviving family and friends. She will be missed by all.
Due to COVID restrictions, details of the (virtual) memorial will be posted on her facebook page or on the funeral homes website. There will be an outdoor tribute in Spruce Grove in the spring. And there will be a small ceremony in Whitewood, Saskatchewan in the summer. (All details TBD)
