Bulmer, Derek Shannon

It is with great sadness we announce that Derek Bulmer passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on January 12, 2021, at the age of 72 years young.
Excelling academically, Derek collected degrees like books. As an Alberta boy his studies took him to Edmonton for university where he met his first wife, Susan, with whom he raised three children. He then went on to practice law for more than four decades. Over the years Derek also volunteered his time in the community with contributions to Meadowlark Christian School, Laurier Heights Baptist Church, the Alpha Program at Beulah Alliance Church, and his children’s sport organizations.
The love of chocolate brownies and books was life long. As was Derek’s passion for travel, sparked by many adventures around the globe in his youth, which continued into his golden years with his second wife, Marianne. In their time together, they spent winters in California and had recently attended an ecumenical summer program at the Tantur Institute in Israel.
Derek held a masters in the art of pontification and was known for his long, entertaining stories and dad jokes. He had a quick wit, kind spirit and never missed a weekly coffee meeting with his cherished Water Buffalos.
Derek will be forever remembered by his adoring wife, Marianne, who brought new joy and love to his life; his children Eryn (Neil), Matthew (Monique) and Christin; as well as by his four grandchildren Nathaniel, Connor, Zachary and Ava. He is survived by his brother Steven (Maria), sister Nancy, numerous nieces, nephews and a loving blended family. Derek is predeceased by Susan and his parents Helen and Mac. While Derek will be dearly missed by all who knew him, he was a man of faith aspiring to finish the race well and was more than prepared to pass into the presence of his Lord.
The Bulmer family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the team of nurses, doctors and specialists at the Misericordia Community Hospital and Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, for the care and compassion provided to Derek.
A celebration of Derek’s life will take place once COVID restrictions permit.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Diabetes Canada at www.diabetes.ca or The Gideons International in Canada at www.gideons.ca.

Sending heartfelt condolences from the Good Neighbour Fund Board of Directors. Derek served on our volunteer Board for almost 10 years, and he helped out a great deal with fundraising activities. Those of us who worked with Derek remember him fondly and were very sad to learn of his passing. We wish your family comfort and peace during this difficult time.

I was fortunate in university days to share a house, known as Sleepy Hovel, with Derek and several other motley types, present company accepted. Derek was a happy and felt presence in that jumble of characters. Ever cheerful and quick with over the top dramatizations of his frequent jokes. He was a good soul. My condolences to his family and his many friends.

I had the privilege of serving with Derek and Marianne as leaders at the Alpha course at Beulah Alliance Church . He was truly a man of God who used his intelligence and sense of humour to spread the Good News of salvation. He was also generous in sharing his experiences and tips in the practice of law. I am saddened by his passing but comforted that his last breath on earth was his first breath in heaven! Praying for comfort for his family and loved ones.

When we first lived in Rainbow Lake, our son got sick and we had to fly down to the hospital in Edmonton. Derek picked us up at the airport, had us stay in their home, and even lent us his car. He would do anything for his family. God bless him. We will meet again!
