Brent Thomas Hughes
April 20, 1951 – February 12, 2016
It is with great sadness and with much love that we said announce the passing of our warrior at the age of 64.
Brent attended Mount Carmel Elementary, St Pius X Junior High, Archbishop MacDonald and St Mary’s High Schools in Edmonton.
From a very young age, Brent held down an assortment of part-time jobs and he dabbled as a disc jockey in his early adulthood. After completing his studies in Television Stage and Radio Arts at SAIT in Calgary, he worked full time as a newscaster/news director at CKCK Regina, CKRD Red Deer, CFCN Calgary, twice with CKPG Prince George (where he met and worked with his wife-to-be, Shirley), CKEK Cranbrook and CKRA Edmonton.
Shirley and Brent were married in 1977 and settled in Edmonton prior to the births of their children, Geoffrey in 1980 and Caitlin in 1986. Brent was a truly loving husband and the very best of fathers.
In 1979, he took a sharp turn in career paths and followed his love of audio and video home entertainment electronics into retail sales with Sound Plus and then Pacific Stereo.
He held several sales and management positions with Sony of Canada starting in 1982. In 1996 he was presented with the Manager of the Year Award for Canada. Ill health and failing vision prompted his early retirement in 1999.
Designing and constructing loudspeakers and rebuilding computers proved to be the most satisfying of hobbies. Brent was well respected for his vast knowledge in the audio realm by his former clients and co-workers and by the many on-line groups in which he participated. It was a great honour to receive a special recognition from The Black Hat Desperaudios, his local audiophile friends, for his ongoing dedication to audio.
Surviving Brent, are his mother Elaine Hughes, his wife Shirley, his children Geoffrey and Caitlin (Tyler Warawa), and his brothers and sisters: Trudi, Randal, Linda (Dan Coulson), Patrick, Susanne (Patrick) McMahon, Debra (Joseph) Morin, Carole, Michele (Pat Nugent), Colleen and Marilyn and a vast and supportive extended family.
He died just one day short of the 25th anniversary of the passing of his father, John, in 1991.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, February 18th at 7 pm at the Woodvale Facility located on the Millwoods Golf Course, 4540-50 Street. (Cremation was chosen.)
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to all of the medical professionals for their all-out efforts to keep Brent with us for so many years.
