It is with great sadness that we announce that, after a long and well-lived life, Laurino DaCosta Branco has passed away at the age of 98 years. He was born on March 30, 1924 to Rosa and Francisco Branco in a small rural town on the island of San Miguel, in the Azores.
Laurino married Maria Lucia Victorino in 1950 and hoping to provide her and their children with a better life he immigrated to Canada, arriving in Edmonton in 1957. He worked for several years for the CNR and saved enough money to bring Lucy and their daughters, Maria and Gabriela, to join him in 1959. He then worked for Poole Construction where he learned the trade of cement finisher and then went on to start his own very successful Cement Finishing company.
Laurino was predeceased by his wife Lucy; sons: Louis-Manuel and John; brother Alvarino; sister Maria; and grandson Adam. Left to honour and celebrate his life are his children: Maria(David), Gabriela, Annabella(Dennis), Louis(Pam), along with his grandchildren Nathan(Allison), Matthew(Karen), Justin(Colleen), Graham(Marie), Amanda(Charles), Landon and Olivia, and great-grandchildren Serenity, Tucker, Mina, and Ronin.
He is also survived by three sisters: Ursulina, Laudelina, and Maria de Luz(Esmeralda).
Laurino was a quiet, hardworking man who loved his family passionately and was very proud of all their accomplishments. He especially enjoyed his time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always had a candy or two in his pocket for them.
Laurino’s family would like to offer our sincerest thanks to the staff on 3A at the Dickensfield Care Center, along with the caregivers from Home Instead, who all treated Laurino with the greatest of care and compassion.
Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories or any charity of your choice.
