BENKE, Margaret Lydia

August 25, 2021 at the age of 93, Margaret was called home to her Lord and Saviour.  She is survived by her sister-in-law Merle Benke, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and their families.

Margaret was born on the family farm in Leduc to Lydia and Gustave Benke.  Margaret finished school and went on to be a student of the Christian Training Institute where she graduated in 1950.  In late 1956 Margaret took a job with Alberta Government Telephones (Telus) and remained in their employ for 31 years.

Margaret always did what she could for the church.  A member of McKernan Baptist since 1956, teaching Sunday School, serving on the Mission Board, Finance and Deacon Boards.

Margaret had a love of travel, music, curling, golf and a passion for working on “The Family Tree”.

Family was very important to Margaret and after retirement she loved to take short drive trips with her sisters Leona and Verna, seeing many unique areas of Alberta.

In 2011, Margaret suffered a debilitating stroke that rendered her right side paralyzed.  Margaret fought her way back to being able to speak and sing.  While living at Extendicare, Margaret participated in everything she could.  From shuffleboard, bingo, bell choir, resident council, sing alongs, and short drive trips to see the crops or the Christmas lights.  Exendicare Fridays are Ice Cream day and it was her favourite day of the week.

Margaret was predeceased by her parents Gustave and Lydia, siblings and their spouses, Ethel (John) Wensel, Rueben (Emma), Milbert (Irene), Jothan (Elfrieda), Leona (Stewart) Cardiff, Verna (Dave) Love and Lawrence Benke.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to visit and spend time with Margaret while she was living in Extendicare Leduc, and to Extendicare for all they did for Margaret in the past 10 years.

Each time I visited Margaret, I left being a better person. She never complained, was always dressed up, because this was the day the Lord would come. He finally came and took my dear wonderful beautiful soul home, where she will be welcomed by those who predeceased her. I’m going to miss those special times, when she shared her life adventures. bragged about her family as we looked at her many pictures. Sipped a little refreshment, laugh as we ate our ice cream cone on Friday afternoon. The kiss we shared when I left. I will always have that special place in my heart for Margaret. God blessed me with her presence in my life. I know it won’t be long before I see her again. Love and blessings
