BERG, Walter John

BERG, Walter John

Born a premature lightweight on Oct 6, 1939 in Lacombe, Alberta, Walter John Berg entered the world tiny but a fighter. Walter would be the second of 10 children blessed to Charlie and Myrtle Berg of Winfield. In those early years, money was hard to come by but there was always plenty of love. The era of his youth taught Walt to become a very dedicated and proud worker. As a teenager alongside his dad, he became a catskinner breaking farmland in Central Alberta. Later as a young adult, Walter went to work on the rigs in the Alberta oil patch. He received awards for his leadership and garnered many lifelong friends. Walter found that the long weeks away were hard on his young family so he, his brother Chuck and brother-in-law Marvin started WMC Sandblasting & Painting in Edmonton’s west end. The WMC shop became a gathering place for friends and business associates alike. Everyone “earned” a nickname along with friendly teasing and perpetual pranks. He loved the friendship and comradery.

In his early fifties, Walt was looking to “retire” so purchased a small farm between Thorsby and Pigeon Lake. He always had cattle (his babies), a dog, a fishpond, and an enormous garden to feed an army–a lifestyle and home he loved and resided at until his final days.

Walt loved and was loved. He was fortunate to find partners-in-life who would take great care of him and share in his love for gardening, camping, dining and especially, cards and more cards. He was deeply proud of his family, too.

Walter is survived by his loving partner Janet Helfrich; his children Grant (Rhonda) Berg, Warren Berg, Cheryl McCartney (Leigh), and their mother Gloria; Delvin (Deanna) Lindsey, and Annette Cowie. Grandchildren include Jared and Regan Berg; Cole, Trey and Keegan McCartney; Chantry, Caleb, Dayton and Kyra-Lee Lindsey; Tyler, Jordon and Lance Cowie. Also, Janet’s children, Curtis (Emelie) Helfrich, Travis (Tracy) Helfrich and her grandchildren. Together they had numerous great-grandchildren.

He is survived by siblings Evelyn Huff, Fay Miller, Charles Berg (Marion Wuetherick), Darlene Berg, Linda (Stephen) Hunter, Kathy Berg, Janice Russell, Jim (Sue) Berg and sister-in-law Joanne Berg, plus numerous nieces and nephews and cousins in whom he always took great pride. Last, but not least, his beloved dog and side-kick, Katie.

Walter was predeceased by his parents Charlie and Myrtle Berg, partner Diane Fitzpatrick, brother Ray, niece Michelle Berg and great-nephews, Jesse Miller and Danny Lints plus cherished brothers-in-law Norman Larsen Sr, Marvin Huff and Craig Russell.

A memorial service for the late Walter Berg (aka Gator, Walt-Bob, Insta-gator, Sir Donut) will be held at the Best Western Denham Banquet Hall in Leduc on Friday, January 13, 2023 at 1:00pm. Hot lunch to follow.

Cremation has taken place and interment will follow in the Spring at the Bunker Hill Cemetery near Winfield, Alberta.

Thank you to the wonderful staff at the Devon Hospital for their caring hands and hearts in Walter’s final weeks. Also, thanks to dad’s neighbors Barb and Doug Crow, Janet’s family, and Evelyn and her friend Larry, who were always there to lend a hand or for one more game of cards over the last couple years during his health challenges. Finally, our special thanks to Janet for her unwavering and selfless devotion to Walt, especially during these last few months. We will always be grateful.

To the Berg family.
I just learned of Walter’s passing. We are deeply saddened for your loss. Walter was a great neighbor. I enjoyed driving by the farm, seeing him riding around on his quad (with his dog if course) and pulling over for a wonderful roadside chat. He was full of life, humor and wit! We will certainly miss him.
May God bless you all and allow the memories to live on.
