Arlinda Emerciana Fernandes


With heavy hearts, our family announces the passing of Arlinda Fernandes (nee Carvalho), September 26th, 2018 at the age of 96.

Arlinda is lovingly remembered by her sons Maurice (Thelma), Terence (Dolly), Brian and Christopher (Ann); granddaughters Renee (Robert), Gina (Ashiq), Michelle (Rodney), and Karanina; and great-grandchildren Oliver, Elliott, Mira, and Linnea.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, George; her two brothers, Avelino and Aires; and her parents Gertrudes and Teodomiro.

Arlinda was born in 1922 in Goa, India. She married George and emigrated to Uganda where she worked as a teacher and a homemaker. They moved to Vancouver, Canada in 1973 after the expulsion of Asians from Uganda. After her husband’s passing in 1982, she divided her time between her sons’ homes. In recent years, she resided in Edmonton with her son, Brian.

Her children remember her as a caring mother who valued education and epitomized resilience and spirit. Arlinda was always positive and encouraged her sons to pursue their goals. She was very proud of them and of their achievements. She was a loving and compassionate mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and will be missed by those who knew her.

The family wishes to thank her incredible caregivers as well as the staff at South Terrace Continuing Care.

A private service and cremation will be held.

A Visitation will be held at Serenity Funeral Service, 5311 – 91 Street NW, Edmonton, AB on Saturday October 6, 2018 from 8:00 PM to 9:30 PM.
