It is with great sadness that the family of Winnifred Atkin announce her passing on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at the age of 98. She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Keith (Dolores); daughter Sharon (Bill); daughter-in-law Dawn, and their children, and sister Olive Jackson.
She was predeceased by her husband Howard, son Lloyd, and sisters Muriel Forrester and Madge Nelson.
Winnie was born at the home of her aunt up the road from her father’s homestead near Altario, Alberta. She was the third of four girls born to William and Annie Gowland. After Normal School in Camrose, she taught until her marriage to Howard Atkin in 1944. They settled in Edmonton to raise their family, only leaving for a two year posting in Jamaica with CIDA. She was an example to us all when she completed her B. Ed. by attending night and summer classes at the University of Alberta in the 1960’s. Winnie was a dedicated teacher until her retirement in 1973. Family was an important part of her life, whether it was big Christmas gatherings, annual family reunions, or frequent Sunday dinners. She lovingly babysat and spoiled grandchildren and great-grandchildren frequently. Another love was gardening – in the ground, not in pots – that she enjoyed until the last.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Sepanmaa-Lund and the Palliative Home Care team for making it possible for Winnifred to remain at home.
A Time of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, July 14, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Greenfield Community Hall, 3803-114 St. NW.
