April 29, 1922 – November 27, 2013
Agnes Muriel Noton passed away peacefully at the Sherwood Care Centre, Sherwood Park, after a lengthy struggle with dementia. She was pre-deceased by her parents and sister Mary (Hector) Stewart. She will be remembered by her children Leigh Noton (Donna) of Ardrossan; Shelley Petch (Kip)of Namao; and Elizabeth Noton of Toronto; and by her much-loved grandchildren Emily, Eddie (Melaina), and David Noton; Bryn (Amber) Petch and Karli (Wade) Hintz.
Muriel was born in Churchbridge SK to Helen and Job Lea. She moved with the family including older sister Mary to Wawanesa MB in 1923 where she grew up and attended school. She was active in music, and figure skating, and after graduating worked for the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Co. Muriel married Bruce Noton of Wawanesa in 1942 and they moved to Ft. William ON where both worked in the TB sanitorium. In 1945 they moved to Flin Flon where her three children were born. As well as being a mother and homemaker Muriel was active in the town’s figure skating, Glee Club, music festival and United Church. Many musical soirees occurred at the Noton house.
The family moved to Saskatoon in 1966 but the marriage struggled and Muriel and Bruce parted ways in 1967. Muriel then worked in an insurance agency and later was office manager at the Alvin Buckwold Children’s Centre, University Hospital, until she retired in 1991. She remained active in gardening, shopping, music and the arts. As an accomplished soprano she was a member of the University Chorus and then, into her eighties, the Sweet Adelines. In 2007 Muriel moved to Edmonton to be closer to her children, and resided at Kensington Village and then Sherwood Care Centre. She’ll always be remembered for her generosity, outgoing social nature, living for the moment, clever quips, and lemon pie.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Muriel’s name to Shepherd’s Care Kensington Village or to the Sherwood Care Centre. Many thanks to the kind staff and residents at those facilities. Cremation has taken place. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Farewell Mom/Grandma – now you are free to sing with the angels.
