It is with profound sadness that the family announces Thyra Larsen of Edmonton, Alberta passed away very suddenly on December 31, 2016, at the age of 81. Lotte, Joanne and Amber were at Thyra’s side as she made a peaceful transition and journeyed onward from her life here with us.
Left behind to cherish her memory is her daughter Lotte Larsen (Billy Keddie), daughter in-law Joanne Larsen, four grandchildren; Amber Larsen (Mikael Raheem), Mark Larsen (Angie Dollimont), Steve Keddie, and Darren Keddie, and seven great-grandchildren; Marisa, Bradley, Riley, Halle, and Cody Keddie, and Colton and Christian Larsen. Other loved ones include her family in Denmark; sister Laura Samsøe, brother Ejnar (Lilly) Christensen, and brother- and sisters-in-law Grethe Nielsen, Georg Larsen and Anni Larsen, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends in Denmark, and many close friends Canada.
Thyra was pre-deceased by her parents; husband Jørgen, daughter Miriam, son Kim, and great-grand daughter Freya.
Thyra was born in Broager, Denmark on October 3, 1935 to parents Magdalene and Lauritz Christensen. She was the second oldest in the family of four. Her family relocated to Sønderborg where she spent her younger years. At the age of 18 she moved to find work in Copenhagen where she met Jørgen and they married on September 3, 1955. Shortly after they welcomed son Kim and daughter Lotte into the family. They also had another daughter, Miriam who died shortly after birth.
The family immigrated to Canada in 1966, settling in Edmonton, Alberta. At first they found it difficult coming to a new country, but eventually embraced Canada and all that this new land had to offer. They made a good life for themselves here but missed their family, and travelled to Denmark often to visit or hosted those who came here. Thyra achieved success at various occupations throughout her working life, but it was her warm personality that endeared her to her coworkers. She easily made friends and continued to stay in touch with many of her colleagues over the years.
Thyra was a kind, fun loving person who cared deeply for her family and friends. When she encountered people she knew she always greeted them with a welcoming smile and was interested to hear how they are doing. Her home was a reflection of her Danish roots, where she loved to entertain family and friends, hosting many gatherings for coffee, meals or parties. She was an expert at making Danish open-faced sandwich, other Danish cuisine, and many other delicious dishes. She had a passion for ballroom dancing with her husband Jørgen and enjoyed playing both competitive and casual shuffleboard. She also enjoyed bowling and being a member of a league. Thyra loved to travel, and she and Jørgen visited many exotic and interesting places including Hawaii, Cuba, Singapore, Thailand, Egypt, Europe and cruises to various locations. She was very excited about her upcoming trip planned for April of 2017 to visit family in Denmark. Thyra was a long time member of the Royal Canadian Legion and spent many hours socializing there, developing many lasting friendships. She also loved and valued a close group of Danish friends with whom she shared the bond of a common heritage from their beloved homeland, meeting each other often for meals, coffee or to celebrate various occasions together. Thyra and Jørgen also developed a special long-term friendship with the Chaudry family; Navid and Sue, and their children Tania, Jamil and Chico.
Thyra was devoted to her husband Jørgen, and she experienced a huge void when he passed away after 58 years of marriage. Although she kept busy with family and friends, she found life lonely after that, and even more so after the loss of her son Kim a few years later. She often said how much she misses them both, and sometimes longed to be with them. It is our hope that they are together.
Thank you to all of the family and friends who called, visited or supported us in any way, we are grateful for your friendship and kindness.
Cremation has taken place. Please join the family for a celebration of Thyra’s life that will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 150 (Strathcona), 9020-51 Avenue NW, Edmonton, AB, T6E 5X4.
