von BORSTEL, Robert Carsten (Jack)

von BORSTEL, Robert Carsten (Jack)
On April 19, 2012, Robert C. (Jack) von Borstel, PHD, DSc (HC) passed away at the age of 87 years in Edmonton.
He is survived by his wife, Pat; sons: Robert of Lake Oswego, Oregon and Reid of Potomac, Maryland; brother Frank (Jo Ann) von Borstel; nephew Eric; niece Julia, and dozens of relatives, most of whom live in Sherman County, Oregon. He was loved by his family, and very much liked and admired by his many friends and by hundreds of colleagues in the world of scientific research.
Jack was born and raised on a wheat farm, but by age five knew that he wanted to be a scientist. He became a Geneticist and pursued his research career passionately throughout his entire adult life. While at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Tennessee) he made significant discoveries in genetics concerning the effects of mutagenic and carcinogen chemicals and radiation on DNA and cell development. In the 1960’s he participated in the Biosatellite Project that established the safety of human space travel and assisted enabling the lunar landing in 1969. In 1971, Jack became Chairman of the Department of Genetics at the University of Alberta. There he continued his research into his greatest interest, the origin of spontaneous mutations in DNA, a major mechanism in the evolution of life on earth and also for the occurrence of cancer. He wrote and coauthored many research publications, and chaired over 50 national and international scientific symposia during his career. He loved teaching and promoting scientific education on a national and international scale.
Jack’s interests were not limited to scientific research. He embodied the concept of “Renaissance Man”. He enjoyed art and music and served energetically on the acquisitions committee of the Edmonton Art Gallery (now Art Gallery of Alberta), he painted, sculpted, made jewelry, loved classical music, played Spanish Guitar, and saxophone in the big band style during high school and college. He wrote prolific amounts of (good) poetry and created exciting stories and children’s books to entertain his sons. Jack’s interest in history was enhanced as he traveled worldwide to conferences in Italy, Switzerland, France and Great Britain while on research sabbaticals, all of which himself and Pat enjoyed immensely.
Jack lived life to the fullest, surviving and thriving for 34 bonus years with three surgeries to repair heart valves damaged by a scarlet fever epidemic while in the Navy during WWII. A special thanks to each and every one of the University of Alberta medical teams and providers for all of their care and effort over the decades. He was known for his favourite saying, “All’s well… that ends”, and indeed it did.
No formal memorial service will be held in Edmonton.
