LUBBERTS, Paulus Johannes
LUBBERTS, Paulus JohannesAugust 15, 1921 — February 22, 2012
On February 22, Paul died as he lived, with strength and dignity.
Paul was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and spent his boyhood with his parents in the Netherlands. As a young man, he was valiant in the underground resistance during WWII and played a part in saving lives and liberating his country. He remained in hiding and eluded capture for the entire duration of the war. When the war ended, he enlisted in the Royal Dutch Marines and served in active combat in Indonesia for four years.
Paul left Indonesia in 1953, and he immigrated from the Netherlands to Canada with a wife and two children in 1954, settling in Edmonton, Alberta. He went on to have two more children in Canada. Over the next 35 years, he worked in the oil industry and for the Federal government, and his productivity contributed significantly to the well being of his family and to Canadian society.
After his retirement at age 65, Paul enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing and just “tramping through the woods.” He loved dancing and music, and spent many evenings at the Canadian legion. In his aging years, Paul lived in Leduc in his own home until his death. The strength of character and determination that permeated his entire life is especially attested to by his heroic recovery from a terrible accident at age 84 during which he sustained many broken bones and internal damage and for which he remained in hospital for 52 weeks. Paul subsequently walked again and returned to live in his own home.
Paul is survived by this brother Hans (Irene) Lubberts and his sister Tineke (Theo) Lubberts, as well as numerous nieces and nephews in the Netherlands, his four loving children Joanna Lubberts and Marijke Mercredi of Leduc, Paul Lubberts Jr. of Edmonton, and Irene Hanson of Viking, Alberta, eleven grandchildren, and seven great– grandchildren who can proudly carry his blood on into the future, and last, but not least, his loyal companion and guardian angel, Zena. Paul is predeceased by his parents Stephanus and Jacoba Lubberts, and two sisters Nel and Magdalena in the Netherlands.
The family wishes to extend our love and deep gratitude to Paul’s caregiver, Irish Ann Cubacub without whom Paul’s final years would have been less joyful and fulfilling. Many community partners supported Paul and his family in his care, and sincere thanks are extended to Dr. Tim Trofimuk and the staff of the Griffith’s Clinic, Marnie and staff of the Leduc Medicine Shoppe, Leduc Home Care, and the wonderful staff of We Care, including Christina, Sharon, Victoria, Linda, Cameron, Anna, and many others.
This honourable man will be waked in his own home at #2, 4420 — 47 Street, Leduc, starting Friday, February 24 at noon and ending with a service in his home on Sunday, February 26 at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend at any time during the course of the wake and refreshments/coffee will be available, as well as join the family in a meal following the service on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that in memory of Paul please do an act of kindness for a fellow human.
