GIBBS, Anne (Annie) Marie

September 18, 1910 — May 9, 2012
Annie passed away peacefully on May 9, 2012 at Extendicare, Leduc with her family by her side. Born in Ferry Point, Alberta September 18, 1910 to parents Anton and Josephine Ramstad. Annie was the oldest of 10 children and predeceased by all.
Annie raised six children on her own (from the ages of two weeks old to 18 years old) — Shirley, Lorne, Laurel, Wayne, Greg and June. Predeceased by sons Lorne and Laurel. She is survived by Shirley, Wayne, Greg and June, special son-in-law Curt and special daughter-in-law Marlene. Annie was so loved and will be missed by her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, very special neighbors — The Schells and her bingo buddy Dorothy and many, many friends.
Throughout her adult years, all she knew was work for her family to survive. She worked many years at Alberta Hospital in the laundry. At one point (for eight years) she worked two full-time jobs (Alberta Hospital seamstress and S.E. Edmonton chemical plant as a short-order cook and one part-time job cleaning the Sands Hotel on weekends) to support her family. Obviously she didn’t get much sleep but still managed to maintain a huge garden to help feed her family. Annie only knew hard physical work and attributed that to her exceptional health and longevity.
Annie finally retired at 78 years old so she could volunteer to take care of the “old” people in her seniors’ apartment block (most of them being much younger than her). She took a car full to bingo, shopping or whatever they needed. She finally quit driving at 85 years old.
Annie had a magnetic personality, always smiled and was loved by everyone who was lucky enough to cross her path. She impacted every life she touched. She loved all animals (especially Barnie), kids and people in general and was happiest when surrounded by them all. She was so generous and would always share what little she had… in her mind, there was always someone worse off than her that needed a hand up — even complete strangers were welcome. She brought home many stray animals (even a huge turtle took over the only bath tub once) to give them a chance.
Annie had such a great sense of humor and when she had time, she loved to play bingo. Annie found something good in everyone she met. She always said “there is good in everyone; you just have to dig deeper in some”.
Sincere thanks to all the staff at Leduc Extendicare — you are beyond “angels without wings” and to Dr. Trevor Byers (best described as a “man” and then a “doctor”). Your sincere caring and compassion is impossible to put into words.
In keeping with her wishes there will be no funeral service held. She wants her friends and relatives to spend at least 30 minutes with someone they love to honor her memory. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Stollery Children’s Hospital.
